Derby Days…

Saturday, May 6, 2011 marks the 137th Run for the Roses. DBG has always wanted to attend the Kentucky
Derby. If she did, she would wear a hat that would make Princess Beatrice proud, drink mint juleps, and stand
out of respect–but remain silent during „My Old Kentucky Home‟.

Churchill Downs will serve 120,000 Early Times Mint Juleps. This feat requires 1,000 pounds of mint and
10,000 bottles of Early Times Julep Ready-to-Serve Cocktail. If this event took place in Louisiana, DBG reckons
they would have to double or triple their whiskey order.

For those of you planning to watch horses named by hipsters and American aristocracy race around an oval;
here is the official Mint Julep recipe: http://www.kentuckyderby.com/experience/traditions/mint-julep2

And Sugar Darling…they don‟t call it the Triple Crown for nothing. The second jewel takes place two weeks
later, in Baltimore at the Preakness, Marylanders line up for The Black-Eyed Susan. DBG hopes the reference
is for the flower and not for domestic violence. http://www.preakness.com/preakness-tradition/black-eyed-susan-

The third semi-precious stone in the crown belongs to the Belmont. They also have a cocktail. DBG will refrain
from talking about the inhabitants of Long Island because she is limited to 200 words in her column. Here is
their “special” beverage: http://www.belmont-stakes.info/belmont-breeze.php
